Siwan Tourism

Siwan City is situated in Siwan district, one of the 38 districts of Bihar. The district administrative headquarters is also located here. It is one of the prominent districts in the state. Siwan is known for its historical and cultural heritage, monuments and the mythology associated with it. It is believed that Siwan was a part of Khosla kingdom in the past. It is also believed that Dronacharya, the guru or teacher of Pandavas and Kauravas from the Mahabharat spend some time in this part of Bihar.

Brief History of Siwan

The name of Siwan City is derived from ‘Shiva Man’ a Bandh king whose dynasty ruled the region for a long time. Siwan City is valued for its connect to the past and a recent excavation of a splendid sculpture of Lord Vishnu at Bherbania village in the district has added to the aura of Siwan City. The city is also linked with Buddhism as numerous architectures relating to the culture has been excavated from this place. Siwan contributed a lot in the freedom movement as many leaders like Mulana Mazharul Haque, Mahamaya Prasad Sinha belonged to this part of Bihar. The first president of India Dr. Rajendra Prasad also hailed from Siwan district.

Tourist Destinations in Siwan

Siwan City is a prominent tourist place in the city because of its historical importance. Ancient temples, ruins of forts and remnants of freedom struggle make Siwan a must-visit for all. Some of the famous and popular destinations of Siwan are:

Zeeradei:It is the birth place of the first president of India, Bharat Ratna Dr. Rajendra Prasad.

Maharajaganj: This part of Siwan once was a focal point of freedom struggle, since the great revolutionary Phulena Prasad was based here and it was from here that he organized his activities against British. Maharajganj is also known for its big bazaar or market.

Bhaiya-Bahini temple: This is a famous temple and is dedicated to a brother-sister duo who laid their lives fighting Mughal soldiers.

Don: Don’t go by the name, it has nothing to do with the film ‘Don’ or the underworld. It is a small village located in the Darauli Block. This place is believed to have association with Dronacharya, the guru of Kauravas and Pandavas of Mahabharata. The ruins of a fort believed to have belonged to the great guru can be found here.It is also a place of importance to Buddhists. A popular Buddhist centre, Drona’s Stupa is located here. Hiuen Tsang, the renowned Chinese traveller has mentioned about this stupa in his travelogue on India.Today, a Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Tara is found there and it is believed that the idol of the goddess was carved somewhere in the 9th century.

Anand Bagh Math & Sunder Bagh Math: This is a hugely popular pilgrimage centre visited by locals and even people from other states as well.

Darauli: The name of the place is derived from the name of Dara Shikoh, the son of Emperor Shajahan. One can find ruins reminding of the Mughal era. Every year on the occasion of Kartik Purnima, a big fair is held here which is attended by locals and tourists.

Faridpur: It known for being the birthplace of Maulana Mazharul Haque, a great freedom fighter and a strong advocate of Hindu-Muslim Unity.

Lakri Dargah: It is an important pilgrimage centre of Muslims as it houses the tomb of a revered saint Shah Arjan of Patria. The dargah is very popular and lakhs of people visit it to pay homage to the great saint.

Mahendra Nath Temple: The Shiva temple located in Mehdar village in Siwan district is one of the most popular temples of Siwan and is visited not just by domestic tourists and locals but even foreigners.

Five-faced Shivalinga : It is another renowned Shiva temple in Siwan, famous for its five-faced Shivalinga. Another feature of this Shivalinga is that one can even spot the faces of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh on it.There is a big celebration during Shivaratri and devotees from even far flung areas visit the temple to seek blessings.

Burhiya Mai Temple : This is situated in Gandhi Maidan. It is believed that the goddess fulfils all wishes. Saturdays are the special days of the temple and witnesses a huge crowd of devotees on this say.
